Phuket road rules

Danger can be defined as: doing something dangerous. Welcome to Phuket! There are a plethora (I had to look that up too) of dangerous things you can do here to satisfy all of your needs. But, lets just skip right on up to the top of the list. Any guesses? No, it’s not a night out at a lady boy bar, that can be a lot of fun ‘according to a friend of mine’. Another guess? No, it’s not that either.

The most dangerous thing you can do is….are you ready? Ride a motorbike or to be more specific…crash a motorbike. Besides the monetary dangers that will occur, you will be responsible for everything as ‘the accident would have never happened if you weren’t here’ (how can you argue with that logic?).

So, here are a few guidelines to follow. You drive on the left side of the road…well…unless you are really far left, that lane is reserved for oncoming traffic. When approaching a red light…DO NOT STOP…simply honk your horn, speed up and proceed through the intersection. But by all means never turn left on a red light even when there is no one within miles of you. Each motorbike is equipped with 2 rear view mirrors, however, the left mirror should be positioned in a way to be able to look at yourself at all times, no one will ever pass you on the left. You may also notice that some people have passengers on their bike, this is not a form of ‘car pooling’ as everyone has their own motorbike.

This add on is actually a primitive form of the ‘air bag’. You can ensure your safety by having them ride between you and the handlbars as you peek over the top. We hope these tips help you stay safe and when all else fails, the best advice (actually given by an embassy) is…’flee the scene’, we all look alike over here. We welcome any other tips you may have to ensure that no other ‘Thai tattoos’ will be received in our lifetime.
