surfing phuket

Maybe not the first thing that springs to mind when coming to Thailand is the prospect of catching some curls, ripping some waves or riding some tubes… obviously I’m talking about surfing here, and the fact the Phuket is the surfing capital of the land of the smiles.

For those keen surfers out there, who may have been without a wave in a while it’s possible to stave of withdrawal symptoms, and if you’re lucky get some quality waves in the beautiful tropical settings of Phuket’s beaches. Even if you’ve forgotten your board, many of the beaches offer board rental at a reasonable price – usual about 100 Baht an hour (although it’s may be possible to haggle them down if it’s not busy).

For those of you who have always wanted to give it a try, there are several beaches where you can get instruction and learn from some of the local surfers, some of which really know what they’re talking about.

When looking for waves, the west coast of the island is your only option, the eastern bay area being sheltered from the Andaman Sea by the island itself and shallow waters that start off the southern peninsular. And don’t worry about transport, as long as you are close to a west coast beach, you will find that most of the beaches offer similar quality and size waves, but if you’re a beginner, stick to the more popular beaches as these usually have life guards that will help you out if you get into trouble (some of the beaches can have strong currents – so check with locals or your hotel first).

Unfortunately, the surf in Phuket is very seasonal, with the high season being largely flat, and only a few instances of swell through the whole season. The best time to come is during the low season, which brings extra benefits such as a more reasonable climate and quieter beaches, but with more unpredictable weather. Sometimes the waves can get too big, especially preceding and during the monsoons. So be careful!
