Sea Activities

Sea ActivitiesSea Activities

Due to Phuket’s tropical weather the ocean is calm and warm, with temperatures of around 28 degrees. Many of the activities mentioned below are popular during the dry season (Nov – April) but not always available in the rainy season due to the dangerous undertow. On many of the beaches you will be advised not to swim at this time, look out for the red flags to warn you.

SnorkellingSnorkelling

Snorkelling
Whether you strike out on your own and head to one of the beaches or take a day trip to one of the nearby islands, you will see an abundance of marine life and coral. Try Kata and Laem Singh Beaches or take a long tail to the island of Koh Khai. For some amazing snorkelling then take a day trip to Phi Phi Island, it has one of the world’s most stunning coral reefs just below the surface, teeming with fish just inches from your face. If you have a fish phobia then stay away.

DivingDiving

Diving
Whether you are an experienced diver keen to update your skills or a beginner wanting to learn something new, then Phuket is the ultimate destination. There is an enormous marine life in the Andaman Sea amongst colourful coral gardens. The warm water attracts an array of exotic marine life, including manta rays and the imposing whale shark. Swim through coral caves and caverns, or explore a ship wreck. Take a local day trip or an excursion on a liveaboard, most professional dive shops offer a range of diving courses from learning to dive to advanced open water courses, or learn underwater photography and capture on film this area of great natural beauty. Word of warning – don’t tease the sharks!

FishingFishing

Fishing
Fishing, for me, always conjures up the image of being wrapped up in a duffle coat, fingers blue with the cold, expect a totally different experience in Phuket. Also you don't need to be an expert to go fishing, it can be fun. Different seasons bring different fish and the fishing here is good all year around. Phuket is ideal for Game Fishing - Marlin, Tuna and Wahoo, Shark, Barracuda and Sailfish. The waters of the Andaman provide the ideal conditions. Charter an entire boat crew for private fishing, take a group of friends and head out to sea or join others on a per person basis on a day trip, longer trips are offered and Night Shark Fishing can even be arranged. The Captains and native fishing crews will be familiar with the local conditions and fishing grounds, so you'll be in competent hands! Or if you are looking for a simple, traditional experience then rent a long tail boat and have a go at the old Thai method of hand jigging which can be fun.

sailingSailing

Sailing & Yachting
Phuket has three marinas, several mooring areas on the island and a large number of yachting and boating clubs. There are a few regattas held on the island each year, the most popular is in celebration of the King’s birthday in December, ‘The King’s Cup Regatta’. The ‘Phang Nga Bay Regatta’ is held around Chinese New Year towards the end of January. If you are interested in learning to sail then you can book lessons, charter a yacht for a days sailing or join in a boat tour for a day or overnights trip. Many cruise operators provide dinner and sunset cruises and one of the most spectacular ways to watch the sun set is from the deck of a junk.

KayakSea Kayak

Sea Canoe/Kayak
Phang Nga Bay is filled with towering limestone rocks and hundreds of tiny islands, many deserted. The ideal way to explore the many sea caves and tunnels in this area is by sea kayak. As you emerge from the cave into an inner lagoon that is open to the sky, you will see some stunning scenery with walls of rock covered with tropical plant life and hear the sound of birds and insects. Kayaking is a safe and serene way to see the landscape and discover the limestone surroundings without disturbing the natural habitat.

WindsurfingWindsurfing

Windsurfing
The best time for windsurfing is during the dry season, when the wind is steady and the sea is calm. You can hire windsurfing equipment from most of the major beaches on Phuket, either from the resorts or the local shops. Boards may be rented by the hour, half-day, full day or longer and lessons for beginners are available. The beaches to check out are Kata, Bang Tao and Patong.

Water Skiing wakeboardingwakeboarding

Water Skiing & Wakeboarding
Most of the main beaches such as Patong and Kata have speedboat operators that hire their boats and equipment for water skiing. Also try the cable-ski park at Kathu.

SurfingSurfing

Surfing
Surfing is good at Kata Beach and Nai Harn in rainy season (May-October) when waves from the Indian Ocean hit the western coast. Every September there is an international amateur championship ‘Quiksilver Phuket Surfing Contest’ on Kata Beach. Check out the hot guys.

ParasailingParasailing

Parasailing
You can go parasailing at any of the major beaches, such as Patong and Kata Beach. It entails being strapped to a parachute and taking a ride across the bay whilst being pulled by a speedboat, high up in the sky you have a spectacular view of the surrounding area. When coming in to land keep an eye out for the stray tourist as you might end up knocking someone out!

Cable SkiCable Ski

Cable Ski
‘Phuket Water Ski Cableways’ is a water-ski park where you can cable-ski on a huge artificial lake. The lake has an overhead cable that tows skiers and wake boarders around a rectangular course. Types of boards available include kneeboards, wakeboards, splashing discs, double-skis and mono-skis.
